The hands behind every cup of tea

China's spring tea is picked by hand, bud by bud, mostly by women over fifty who travel far from home for a few weeks of work with no contract and no insurance. FairTea2030 is a student-led campaign to change that.

Skilled work, without a safety net

Premium tea cannot be picked by machine. One bud and one leaf, pinched off whole, forty to fifty thousand times a day. The industry depends on experienced hands, and gives them very little back. 5

Most migrant pickers earn 180 to 200 yuan a day for a season of a little more than twenty days. A few days of rain, heat or illness can erase much of it. Hired by farming households through brokers, almost none have a contract, and the law that provides injury insurance does not reach them. 310

The Weight of Tea

Every spring, women from inland provinces travel to the tea hills of Yixing for a few weeks of picking. The film follows one harvest from the first frying lesson to the last weigh-in of the day, and lets the pickers say the rest.

The campaign grew out of field research on older rural women who follow the harvest from crop to crop. The white paper sets out what their working lives look like, how Korea, Japan and southern Europe protect comparable workers, and what could be done in China.
