Protect the women who harvest our tea

Why we are petitioning

Behind every cup of premium loose-leaf tea is the hidden labor of women. They pick leaves, sort buds and haul baskets from before dawn, for a season that lasts a few weeks. Most have no contract, no pension, no injury insurance and no voice. Years of stooping and repetitive work leave them with arthritis and back injuries, and many still care for grandchildren and aging parents.

Without them there would be no harvest. This must change.

What we are demanding

We, the undersigned, call for fair-trade standards across loose-leaf tea by 2030, beginning with urgent protections for the women who harvest it:我们，联名者，呼吁在2030年前让散茶产业全面达到公平贸易标准，并首先为采茶女工落实以下紧迫保障：

A basic safety net for seasonal farm workers that covers injuries, medical costs and pensions, funded by government and employers together.
Let pickers bargain together with cooperatives and companies, with wages paid on time and in full view.
• Health care in the fields田间医疗服务. Mobile clinics and check-up stations in tea districts during the harvest, with screening for the injuries this work causes.
Retailers and brands publish how the people who pick their tea are paid and protected.
• Recognition in the statistics纳入统计与社会承认. Count seasonal women tea workers in labor statistics and include them when policy is written.
